Will you replace the container?
A self-watering planter combines planting space with water storage. A drip system supplies existing containers through lines and outlets. That difference can matter more than a timer or an app.
For established plants in suitable pots, changing the watering method may be less disruptive than changing every container. Starting fresh gives you an opportunity to plan the container and watering arrangement together.
Plan the refill routine
Individual reservoirs spread storage across the garden. A shared tank concentrates refilling but adds tubing and connections. Draw the refill route and consider how you will check each water level.
Ask what happens during heavy rain and where overflow goes. Read the instructions for drainage arrangements. Protect surfaces and neighbors: a balcony is not an isolated garden bed.
Storage does not establish suitability
A reservoir does not prove a planter suits every crop, growing medium or climate. Match planting space and care routine to the plant. Check instructions about establishment and how water reaches the growing medium.
For drip systems, inspect distribution rather than counting outlets alone. Different pots and plants may need separate groups or manual attention instead of one unchanged schedule.

Mixing approaches is reasonable
You can use built-in storage for one new planter and water established pots separately. One technology need not serve the entire space. Before an absence, observe the actual refill interval and root-zone moisture. Treat “waters for weeks” as a claim to verify in your conditions, not a universal promise.
